More Than 600 Presbyterian Leaders Partner With Dozens Of Schools Across New Mexico To Promote Healthy Living

Release Date:

October 22, 2014

More than 14,000 children to participate in healthy activities on this day

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Presbyterian Healthcare Services turns 106 years old on Oct. 24, and our commitment to improving the health of the communities we serve is as strong as ever. For the third year in a row, Presbyterian is partnering with Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Los Lunas  Public Schools and holding a Day of Service to help schoolchildren learn how fun it can be to stay active and eat healthfully.

The annual Day of Service has led to long-term relationships between Presbyterian facilities and schools in a couple of instances. For example, Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital has formed a close partnership with Inez Elementary School, starting in October 2012. Over the past two years, several classrooms from Inez have toured the hospital and participated in educational, health-related activities. Staff members from Kaseman have also been guest speakers in classrooms, judges at science fairs and last year served Thanksgiving meals to students and their families.

“Our Day of Service is an important part of our commitment to improve the health of the patients, members and communities we serve,” said Kathy Davis, RN, senior vice president and chief nursing officer for Presbyterian. “We love being able to visit the schools and encourage kids to learn lifelong behaviors that will allow them to lead healthier lives.”

More than 600 Presbyterian leaders will spend a day with children at 34 schools in the Albuquerque area.  About 14,000 children are expected to join the fun, which will include jump roping, dancing, exercising and learning about healthy food. On Oct. 24, Presbyterian leaders will also celebrate healthy living with 1,000 individuals in other communities across New Mexico, including Española, Socorro and Tucumcari.
